8. Draft articles :: LO1

Draft Article NO 1.

1.   What will the article be about?

For my double page spread (DPS), the article will be about Sheffield weekly and news about Sheffield. For my photograph, I intend to do a collage of photos throughout this page which represent everything to do with Sheffield this week. This will link to my Unit 31 work of the identity of Sheffield, meaning that some photographs will take less time to produce.

2.   How will it appeal to your audience?

My double page spread will appeal to the target audience as it is aimed at young males interested in business with the demographics A-B. Due to being aimed at business (where most people are working in the office), taking photos of the outside will allow them to see Sheffield in a week without having to leave the office, therefore being more convenient and practical for them. It also allows a sense of freedom; as being stuck in an office all day can be laboring for some people. This means that people can gain escapism (unit 1) which gives them the ability to free themselves of their job at any point throughout the day.

Draft Article NO 2.

1.   What will the article be about?

This article will be an interview of Sheffield as an area. Here people will be asked of their opinion to Sheffield as a city, and what they think should be improved or maintained throughout Sheffield. I hope to survey at least 5 people to get a true unbiased opinion of the city. I will then quote people who I have interviewed to create short sentences which sum up their interview as a whole; This creates a flexible and dynamic weekly double page spread which would attract the audience (3.). The picture complementing this double page spread would be a model dressed according to the majority of responses for the said week. For example, if the majority of people surveyed state they like the ‘greenness’ on the city, the model would be dressed in smart casual, with the photo taken against a background representing the most occurring feature (in this case the green hilly area behind the station would be perfect).

2.   Interview Questions

Question in the interview that could be asked include:
-       What do you think about Sheffield?
-       What do you think could be improved in Sheffield?
-       What do you think should be maintained in Sheffield / What do you like about Sheffield?
-       What do you mainly commute to Sheffield for? Or do you live here?

3.   How will it appeal to your audience?

People often read magazines to gain relevant and dynamic news which have occurred between issues. For my audience of businessmen, this page of the magazine would appeal to them as it (similar to the other page) gives a short snapshot of the area which changes every week. In a real magazine people would be able to submit their own survey response online from which a random amount would be picked to put in the magazine.

Article 1) DSP INTRO & FULL ARTICLE

Welcome to another occurrence of Sheffield Weekly. Today we look into the greenery of Sheffield and why our city is labelled not only the ‘greenest city in England’ but also having more trees per person than any other city in the European Union.
Having over two million trees in the city, there’s no wonder Sheffield is labelled as being the greenest city in England. However, excluding trees, what more does Sheffield have to make it such a green city? Sheffield bears a total of eighty-three parks, of which thirteen are ‘City’ parks, twenty are ‘District’ parks and fifty are ‘Local’ parks. If that isn’t enough, a number of nature reserves within the City region occupy 1,600 acres of land, a huge footprint for a relatively small city.

Sheffield boasts many famous parks, one of which is Sheffield Winter Garden’s. Winter Garden’s consists of many water features, famously the Goodwin fountain, named after Sheffield industrialist Stuart Coldwell Goodwin; which is quite ironic really! Winter Garden’s Goodwin fountain is made up by eighty-nine separate water jets, making it quite a unique water piece. Winter Garden’s redevelopment in 1998 allowed for the gardens to receive many accolades and awards.

Sheffield, having many office related building can make the city seem very industrial masking the inner greenery, on closer viewing however patches of greenery are very noticeable all throughout the City. A recently new development of green space outside of the UTC Sheffield has converted a standalone car park to a small park area with benches and a river. This really complements the city showing the transformation of the city .
The new park, taking only a few months to complete, is inspiration for other cities in regards to how simply green space can be planted throughout. Water features like existing rivers are a great place to start, and simple concrete constructs can really liven up a place. Sheffield has been working with this state of mind for over 30 years, which is no wonder why Sheffield is the greenest city in England.
